And your message is so flattering and sweet <3 Thank you so much.

WARNING: Contains bias-ness, brutal honesty, average English and bashing of anime/manga/movie stereotypes. Don’t read if you’re easily offended.
Uzumaki is the best horror manga FOR ME because:
- Unique, creative and original plotline. Terror starts with a simple thing such as a spiral — that alone is enough to make the reader curious. It will keep your attention glued to this manga like how the spiral hypnotizes people in this story.
- Highly entertaining. Even non-horror fans will enjoy this! It’s both horrifying and funny at the same time.
- Awesome sequencing/arranging of events. Junji Ito is an author whose works are thoroughly researched and I find that very impressive. Each chapter may look like a oneshot but I can tell how much effort and brainstorming he went through just to produce each event in this story. The beginning is as perfect as the ending. It was very satisfying… unlike other manga that gets dragging and boring the further you read on.
- It’s DIRECT to the point. No unnecessary fanservice, no excessive graphic scenes, no complicated dialogues, no explicit explanations, very easy to understand and it focuses on making the plot even more interesting while scaring its audience at the same time. The “flashing” of the scary images are placed in the right panels and page—making me me realize that even a manga can be scary if it can be if done well.
- The style of the artwork. Very eerie, creepy and dark. It’s true that it may not be the best for gore hounds since they want VERY DETAILED guro drawings. But once again, this author wasn’t trying to impress you with his art nor the gore… but the horror. Keyword there is HORROR. Not all horror can be simply achieved by being disgusting alone.
- It doesn’t have the “anime cliche.” One of the reasons why Uzumaki stands out. It doesn’t have the usual anime stereotype where we get a vampire/zombie for a cheap scare, an energetic loser for a main character, a harem filled with boobs that are scarier than the monsters etc. Of course I’m aware how dumb Kirie is for being so oblivious despite the creepy shit happening around her. But if you think about it, the spirals might have messed up Kirie and the townspeople’s minds.
- Scary in all fields. The spirals not only horrify people physically but also psychologically. I’m a fan of both body and psychological horror and I found both beautifully executed in Uzumaki.
- Unpredictable. This is the type of manga I always wanted to read. A series where you cannot guess how it will end. It shamed all those pointless gore movies where I can already guess how it will end judging by the summary or beginning of the movie.
- “No escape” theme. Wonder why I’m a huge fan of Ibitsu and The Grudge series? Cause I wanted to have an ending where a character’s only way to escape is death itself. Yes, I’m a freak with those kind of stories.
I know a lot of people doesn’t consider Uzumaki as the best horror manga and I respect that (since you guys have your own POV’s and opinions on what horror is). However, I also have my own standards and preferences in choosing manga like the things I mentioned above. For me, it will remain my no.1 recommendation to all horror manga fans like me or even to all new readers of the horror genre.
Lmao, so it has that effect on you? The manga didn’t make me dizzy but it resulted to these:
- After Uzumaki, I can’t stop using the “@__@” smiley.
- Ever since I saw pregnant women using drills to suck blood, I lose all respect to vampires.
- So yeah, fuck Uzumaki for shaming all vampires.
- Fuck Uzumaki for making snails look scary.
- Fuck Uzumaki for making mushrooms look scary.
- I simply refuse to stare at the palm of my hands.
- I also CHANGED my mind about curling my hair. I threw all my curlers away.
And yeah, you’re welcome. I wish there’s more series like Uzumaki @_@
Aww, why not? Horror is the new pr0n ;) And thanks <3

I am more of a manga reader than anime watcher. If it’s horror anime, there’s nothing I can recommend aside from the mainstream ones (Petshop of Horrors, Elfen Lied, Death Note, Jigoku Shoujo etc.) For some reason, anime doesn’t really scare me as much as manga does. Maybe it’s because they make anime TOO “child-friendly” like omitting/lessening a lot of creepy/gore scenes. Also, the lack of Junji Ito in anime is killing me O_< (I wish Gyo will come soon). Highschool of the Dead was an anime full of pantyshots and bewbs. It was awesome in the first 5 eps but the excessive fanservice overpowered the horror that I find it a joke now. Even the OVA sucked. I am not into vampire anime either (except Hellsing since I’m always into anti-hero main characters).
And I’m not sure if you’ll consider this as an anime but you can try watching “Urban Legend Hikiko.”
