Title: Hellstar Remina
Author: Junji Ito
One day, the world found out about newly discovered star, that was “eating” other stars. At first, it was so far away, that it became just a nice curiosity entertaining people in their normal daily lives. Then, it begun to come closer and closer, finally eating some of the solar system’s planets and taking a straight course for Earth itself…
Hellstar Remina is a spectacular tale of ultimate and unavoidable destruction of humankind, that came unexpected and without humanity’s own “help”. It’s also a solid overview of how people can’t cope with their own most primitive instincts (blind revenge), even in the face of final doom.
I don’t understand why a lot of of people think this is the worst manga Junji Ito made. Although there are some details here that may not be scientifically accurate… there are a lot of horrifying scenes here that are quite disturbing and may happen in real life. Besides, for you haters, I don’t think Astronomy 101 is what the author is trying to get into your critical and narrow minds but how ugly humanity can be when on the brink of destruction. If the end of the world were to happen, I’m sure people are gonna blame it to someone or something and they will all go crazy looking for “justice” when in fact they are just trying to save themselves. Also the pain of seeing your loved ones die and friends betraying you is very sad… I can’t help but feel sorry for the main character in this story. Junji Ito managed to capture that PERFECTLY.
So for those who find this story ugly, I feel sorry for you cause you’re truly missing out the point of this manga.
